History of CCMH

A Community’s Vision

Carroll County Memorial Hospital began as a dream shared by local families who recognized the need for healthcare close to home. The laying of the hospital’s cornerstone in August 1955 marked an important step toward making that dream a reality.

The hospital was built through a combination of funding sources, including support through the Hill-Burton Act. This federal program helped communities build and improve hospitals, expanding access to healthcare across the country. Here in Carroll County, that investment, together with the dedication of the community, helped establish a lasting foundation for local care.

Growing with Our Community

As the needs of the region changed, Carroll County Memorial Hospital expanded its facilities and services to meet them.

In 1971, a major addition expanded the medical-surgical patient care area with additional inpatient beds. The project also provided space for dietary services, a cafeteria, laundry, materials management, and storage to support the hospital’s daily operations.

Growth continued in 1992 with the construction of an intensive care unit alongside the medical-surgical unit. In 1999, a new emergency department and two physician suites were added, creating more space for emergency care and physician practices.

Further renovations in 2006 updated a significant portion of the hospital and added offices for specialty clinics and surgical care. Each project reflected an ongoing commitment to helping residents receive more of the care they needed within their own community.

Expanding Access to Care

In 1992, CCMH opened a hospital-based Rural Health Clinic to improve access to healthcare for residents of Carroll, Trimble, and Gallatin counties. The clinic helped connect patients with local medical services, including those covered by Medicare and Medicaid.

In 2000, the hospital became a Critical Access Hospital, an important milestone in its role as a rural healthcare provider. Today, CCMH provides inpatient care and transitional care to help patients recover and prepare to return home, along with emergency care, outpatient testing, rehabilitation, and other services.
